Patient Information
If body fluids are lacking, they will be restored with basic solutions, which means defined combinations and concentrations of water and electrolytes (e.g. sodium chloride solutions) or carbohydrates (glucose).
Basic solutions correct the balance of water, electrolytes and acid-base-status in particular in the tissues.
Furthermore, basic solutions are:
- used as a carrier for several active agents (e.g. I.V. antibiotics)
- part of a sufficient parenteral nutrition therapy.
Remember: 50-60% of our total body weight is water and electrolytes.
